I really want to believe this, but it feels like every election cycle we get a 'new hope' figure, and then nothing fundamentally changes. Fidesz has such a grip, it's hard to imagine anyone truly breaking through their system.
Let's not forget his past connections though. He literally rose through the ranks of the system he's now 'fighting'. That's a huge red flag for many who actually want *real* change, not just a reshuffle of the same deck.
Judging by his statements so far, he looks promising, as he positions himself as a defender of traditional Western values whilst remaining within a pro-European framework. It is absurd that, until now, figures of this kind have looked primarily to powers outside Europe. Furthermore, there is a practical need to mend relations with the EU: if it is true that Orbán has his sights set on the Commission, sending him to Brussels would allow him to rid himself of his only significant political opponent.
